Since its conception in the early 80’s independent music has continued to reinvent itself, usually adopting different styles according to the current trend of a particular given period. The term independent music was originally used to describe band and individuals who chose to not get singed n to major recording label like Virgin, Universal etc and preferred to tackle the music industry all by themselves. Most of the UK independent music bands were driven by the need to make a statement that reflected their culture, predominantly geared towards self expression.

This method of expression later gave rise to the punk culture that advocated for a self reliant approach to life. It is somewhat difficult to tell the difference between indie pop and indie rock as both maintain a similar musical style which includes pop-oriented styles. A UK independent band that claims to be indie rock will argue that they are more genuine in their upholding of the punk culture.

Although for years UK independent music bands have maintained a trend can be classified as a variation of rock music, there has emerged new forms of independent music that has moved away from the punk ethos. Neo Soul or Nu Soul is one of the recent indie trends that emerged in the 90’s. This type of indie music has borrowed from the 70’s soul music, with a touch of hip hop and jazz-funk. Neo Soul was introduced by major record label in an effort to divert attention from the older forms of Rhythm & Blues (R&B) and Hip Hop styles.

UK independent musicians choosing the Neo Soul genre prefer that the music and the artists themselves remain ‘underground’, as commercialising their music tends to lose its lustre. Most of these new forms of independent music bands will market themselves online and offer download options.
