Bands that fall under the independent music category are those that prefer to compose and release their music independent of major recording labels. Putting together a successful show is no easy fete as most UK independent music bands know which is why they will seek help of other independent bands and their supporters. So why do bands and individuals choose the independent way?
Some UK independent music bands and individual artists prefer to stay independent regardless of whether they are offered to get signed by major labels or not. Bands and individuals going independent claim that they still make money producing their own music, sometime even more than they would with a major label. There however exist independent labels that are not funded by any outside organising and lack their own distributing channels. These indie labels are usually a one or two-man show running the production and distribution of the music.
The onset of independent music was characterised by a DIY – Do It Yourself culture wave that hit around the 80’s. The UK independent music bands and individuals of this period were trying to promote their ideologies of nonconformity and opposition to systems that they perceived were out to oppress the common man. Some bands moved from their contracts with major recording labels to convert to independent musicians.
Signing on with a major label means restrictions for most bands as there is a contract to be adhered to. It is the freedom to make their own decisions that drive UK independent music bands to stay so. It has also been proved that independent labels are better placed to, and more often than not do, discover some of the best musical talents and the upcoming trends. Major labels do rely on their independent labels to outsource good talent.
